Legal Orientation and Legal Counselling for Women with Disabilities at Surkhet

Access Planet organized a one-day Legal Orientation and Legal Counselling Program for women with disabilities and parents/caregivers of persons with disabilities in Birendranagar, Surkhet on 7th June 2026. The event was designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of legal rights, access to justice mechanisms, and available support services while also providing opportunities for confidential legal consultation. 40 women with disabilities participated in the legal counselling organized in the support of Legal Empowerment Fund.
Objectives
The program aimed to:
- Increase awareness of legal rights among women with disabilities.
- Provide confidential legal consultation to participants facing legal and social challenges.
- Connect participants with relevant service providers and support mechanisms.
- Enhance understanding of available justice mechanisms and municipal-level support services.
- Promote confidence among women with disabilities to seek justice and claim their rights.
Outcomes
The program achieved the following outcomes:
- Enhanced legal awareness among women with disabilities and caregivers.
- Increased understanding of available justice mechanisms and support services.
- Identification of several individual cases requiring legal and social follow-up.
- Strengthened participants’ confidence to report violence and discrimination.
- Improved knowledge regarding disability rights, legal protections, and government services.
- Established connections between participants and legal resource persons for future support.
Conclusion
The Legal Orientation and Legal Counselling Program successfully provided women with disabilities and caregivers with practical knowledge on legal rights, violence prevention, access to justice, and available support services. The combination of legal orientation, interactive discussions, and confidential counselling created a meaningful platform for empowerment and problem-solving.
The issues raised by participants highlighted the continuing barriers faced by women and girls with disabilities in accessing justice, education, social protection, and property rights. Continued follow-up, referral, and individualized support will be essential to ensure that participants are able to realize their rights and access appropriate services.
