Dialogue with Media representatives at Dang on Disability Inclusive Justice Mechanism at the Local Level

Access Planet Organization, in support of USAID / The Asia Foundation Civil Society and the Media under the project entitled: “Strengthening Women's Network to Foster Access to Justice for Women with Disabilities”, conducted a dialogue with the members of media representatives based at Dang district. The dialogue aimed to create co-understanding amongst the media representatives on issues and rights of girls and women with disabilities and to advocate how media can promote covering the issues of women with disabilities strongly at the Tulsipur Dang.

Objectives:

• To sensitize media representatives on the rights and issues of girls and women with disabilities at the local level
• To aware media about production of right based content on disability issues
• To gather commitments from media representatives for publishing and broadcasting more sensitively on the issues of access to justice of women with disabilities.

During a discussion led by Access Planet president Gargi Nepal, media representatives pledged to improve coverage of issues faced by women with disabilities. Commitments included adopting a rights-based approach, giving more media space to women with disabilities, using respectful language, and sharing success stories. They also vowed to move beyond charity-based narratives, ensure inclusivity in their reporting, and address challenges while covering disability-related issues.

Outcomes 

• Media representatives have been oriented on the disability and rights-based approaches on disability
• Media representatives have shared their commitments to cover more on issues of women with disabilities and on right-based approaches
• Access Planet’s networking and relationship with the media representatives have been strengthened.
