Interaction on The Role of Local Government in Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction

On February 18, 2024, Access Planet Organization conducted an interactive discussion on "The Role of Local Government in Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction" at the Executive Hall of Athabiskot Municipality, West Rukum. The program aimed to explore the role of local authorities in addressing disaster risks for persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusive disaster response mechanisms.
Objectives:
The main objectives of the Interactions are as follows:
- To make responsible to the local government about the importance of disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction
- To provide a platform for persons with disabilities to share their challenges and experiences during disasters.
- To assess the effectiveness of current municipal programs and services for persons with disabilities in disaster preparedness and response.
- To encourage municipal officials to enhance inclusive policies and infrastructure for better accessibility.
The event brought together 35 participants, including 7 municipal representatives and 28 community members, primarily women with disabilities. The discussion focused on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during disasters and the role of local authorities in ensuring inclusive disaster response. Participants shared their experiences and called for accessible services, inclusive relief efforts, and better representation. Municipal officials presented their ongoing initiatives, including hostel facilities, health camps, and inclusive disaster strategies. The event concluded with a commitment from the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to address the concerns raised and develop disability-inclusive and women-friendly disaster risk reduction policies.
Outcomes:
- The interaction provided a valuable platform for open and constructive dialogue between municipal officials and women with disabilities
- Participants emphasized future programs and policy improvements to address the concerns raised during the discussion.
- Strong commitment made by the municipality representatives to enhance its efforts in making disaster risk reduction more inclusive and ensuring better accessibility in local governance.
