Issue Identification Workshop on Education and Access to Technology for Girls and Young Women with Disabilities

On May 3–5, 2022, Access Planet Organization held a three-day "Comprehensive Training on Right Relating to Education and Advocacy Skills" in which six women from Dhangadi Sub Metropolitan City, Far-Western Province, Nepalgunj Sub Metropolitan City of Lumbini Province, and Kathmandu Valley of Bagmati Province participated. The goal of the training was to empower the participants with advocacy skills so they could lead advocacy for the education of girls and young women with disabilities in their communities. Following the training, advocacy committees were established in each of the three provinces to address concerns pertaining to education for young women with disabilities in their localities.

On May 29, 2022, Access Planet Organization held a one-day "Issue Identification Workshop on Education and Access to Technology for Girls and Young Women with Disabilities" in Nepalgunj as the second phase of the training. The workshop was led by the advocacy committee of the sub-metropolitan city. The program made sure that people from a variety of backgrounds, including students with disabilities, their parents, teachers who work with girls with disabilities in the classroom, and representatives of organizations involved in the disability rights sector, participated. This variety in participation gathered viewpoints from many angles and is anticipated to have made sure that issues relating to education and access to technology for girls and young women with disabilities in Nepalgunj were collected.

In the workshop conducted in funding support of Disability Right Fund (DRF) following major issues were identified:

  • Issues concerning physical infrastructure
  • Issues concerning quality of education
  • Issues concerning participation in decision making process
  • Special issues concerning education of women and girls
  • Issues concerning public awareness
  • Solutions to the issues identified

Outcomes of the workshop:

  1. 35 participants were able to present about the rights relating to education for girls and women with disabilities.
  2. Issues faced by girls with disabilities in education and access to technology were collected from diverse sectors like students with disabilities, parents of girls with disabilities, teachers of girls with disabilities and representatives from organizations working in disability right sector.
  3. The participants got chances to enhance their skills on advocacy through direct participation in presentation and discussion.
  4. The workshop strengthen grassroots movement of young women with disabilities in Lumbini Province.
