Orientation on Disability Inclusive Justice System in Kathmandu

On 10th June 2025, Access Planet Organization conducted an orientation on 'Disability Inclusive Justice System at Kathmandu' in the funding support of the WFA-LFS. The program was specifically designed to orient police officers, lawyers, and representatives from OCMC (one stop crisis management center) with essential knowledge on disability rights, inclusive justice practices, and legal frameworks necessary to promote accessible and equitable justice for persons with disabilities. A total of 24 persons representing Nepal police, District courts, supreme court, OCMC, Nepal Bar Association participated in the program

  • To raise awareness about the diverse types of disabilities and the systemic barriers persons with disabilities face in order to promote inclusive justice practices.

The orientation was organized to raise awareness on disability rights, types, and models and to improve access to justice for persons with disabilities. The sessions were facilitated by Ms. Laxmi Nepal, Executive Director of Access Planet, and Advocate Mukunda Hari Dahal, both experienced in the field of disability rights. Participants discussed common misconceptions, legal definitions, and real-life challenges through a case study of a deaf woman who was denied justice after facing violence. Key barriers such as lack of sign language interpreters, untrained police personnel, and inaccessible legal procedures were highlighted. The training also focused on possible solutions, including establishing a fast-track justice system, promoting supported decision-making (as practiced in Sweden), and strengthening collaboration between government and disability organizations. Participants were also introduced to international and national legal frameworks like CRPD and ARPD.
