Orientation and Interaction Program with Journalists Regarding Disability Sensitivity in Media

Access Planet Organization, with the support of the Legal Empowerment Fund, successfully conducted workshop with Journalists regarding Disability Sensitivity in Media at Sunrise Cafe & Banquet, Bhaktapur on 12th April 2026. The training had the participation of 23 media representatives from different media organizations.

Main Objectives:

  • To enhance disability awareness among journalists and media professionals by increasing their understanding of disability concepts, types of disabilities, disability statistics, and different models of disability.
  • To promote disability-sensitive and inclusive media reporting by encouraging the use of respectful language, rights-based narratives, and accurate representation of persons with disabilities.
  • To strengthen collaboration between disability rights advocates and media representatives in order to improve public awareness and advocate for disability inclusion through media platforms.

Outputs:

  1. 23 journalists and media representatives participated in the orientation and interaction program, gaining knowledge on disability rights, accessibility, reasonable accommodation, and inclusive reporting practices.
  2. Increased understanding of disability-sensitive journalism among participants, including the importance of moving away from charity-based or stereotypical portrayals toward rights-based and inclusive reporting.
  3. Concrete recommendations were generated for media organizations, including adopting disability-inclusive editorial policies, improving accessibility through subtitles, sign language interpretation, and screen-reader-friendly content, and increasing coverage of disability-related issues.

Conclusion:

The Orientation and Interaction Program successfully created a platform for meaningful dialogue between disability rights advocates and media professionals. The program enhanced participants' understanding of disability issues and highlighted the media's crucial role in promoting inclusion and shaping public perceptions. Participants emphasized the need for continued capacity-building, accessible media practices, and rights-based reporting to ensure that the voices and experiences of persons with disabilities are accurately represented. The event concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening disability-sensitive journalism and fostering a more inclusive media landscape in Nepal.
